Step-by-step Instructions for Ordering Data from the EOS Data Gateway (EDG)

  1. These instructions will help you with many datasets, but are not always appropriate. When they fail, check the individual data centers, or use the EDG Tutorial at http://redhook.gsfc.nasa.gov/~imswww/Tutorial/main.html.

  2. If you are reading this from paper, then
    • Go to your computer and bring up your web browser (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer).
    • Type in the URL: http://eos.nasa.gov/imswelcome
    • Continue with #4 below.
  3. If you are viewing this from the CD, then
    • Use the menu bar at the top of this page to go to the Data page.
    • Click on Local Links near the top of the page.
    • Click on the How to find and order EOSDIS Earth-observing data "Local Link" near the bottom of the page.
    • In the text below Find, Browse, and Order Earth-observing Instrument Data, open the link to the EDG.
  4. At the EOS Data Gateway page, Enter as a guest (or as a registered user if you have registered earlier).
  5. Wait for the EDG Primary Data Search page to display.
  6. If you have the image scene ID, from information in this CD, or from another source (Note that searching by granule ID will NOT work in some cases, e.g., data supplied by Langly ASDC), then
    • As appropriate, select either Local Granule ID or Data Granule ID from the Search Types Menu on the far left.
    • Wait for the selected Search page to display.
    • Click on the Data Set button to choose the appropriate dataset:
      • Wait for the EDG Keyword Selection: Data Set page to display.
      • If appropriate, choose and apply the Filters for the Data Set. These are usually the places that supply the data to the public.
      • From either Data Set List #1, #2, or #3, choose the dataset(s), e.g., Landsat 7 Level-0R WRS Scene V002 and Landsat 7 Level-1 WRS Scene V002. (Use the shift key to choose 2 or more adjacent data types.)
      • Click on the OK! button at the bottom of the EDG page.
    • When the EDG Data Granule ID Search page displays, note that the Data Set has been chosen.
    • Type or paste in the ID (ECS IDs usually start with SC:, but others do not).
    • Continue with #7 below.
  7. If you have the geographic coordinates, or know the map location, then:
    • Under Choose Search Keywords -- Method 2 , choose SENSOR in the scroll box and click on the SELECT button.
      • On the new page, Keyword Selection: Sensor, under Filters for Sensor:, select an appropriate filter (e.g., INFRARED SENSORS) in the scroll box, and then click on the Apply button.
      • When the Keyword Selection: Sensor page redisplays, from the sensor list select one instrument (e.g., MISR or MODIS), and then click on the OK! button at the bottom of the EDG page.
    • -- or -- choose DATA SET in the scroll box and click on the SELECT button.
      • Wait for the EDG Keyword Selection: Data Set page to display.
      • If appropriate, choose and apply the Filters for the Data Set. These are usually the places that supply the data to the public.
      • From either Data Set List #1, #2, or #3, choose the dataset(s),
      • e.g., ASTER L1A RECONSTRUCTED UNPROCESSED INSTRUMENT DATA V002 or ASTER L1B REGISTERED RADIANCE AT THE SENSOR V002. (Use the shift key to choose 2 or more adjacent data types.)
      • Click on the OK! button at the bottom of the EDG page.
    • When the EDG Primary Data Search page displays, note that the sensor (or dataset) has been chosen.
    • Choose the Search Area. You can draw on the map, or type in the numbers for a range in Latitude and Longitude. For CONUS data used on this CD-ROM, do the latter (A minus sign is needed for coordinates south of the equator or west of Greenwich.):
      • Use the mouse to select the Northern data entry box and type in 49.0.
      • Use the mouse to select the Southern data entry box and type in 24.0.
      • Use the mouse to select the Western data entry box and type in -67.5.
      • Use the mouse to select the Eastern data entry box and type in -124.5 .
      • Now click on the Display lat/ong range on map button. You should see a red square boxing in the United States. If not, double check the numbers that you typed in.
    • Optional - Choose a Date/Time Range. For most of the ENSO data used on this CD-ROM, select the Start Date data entry box and type in 1998-01-01, then select the Stop Date box and type in 1998-12-31 [time not needed].
  8. Now click on the Start Search! button near the bottom of the EDG page.
  9. Wait for the search to finish! The information in the EDG Search in progress page will keep you informed.
  10. If the search completes with zero results, check the Data Center Comments for each DAAC. You may have to rerun the search at a different time.
  11. If the search is successful and results are being returned, you can wait for the end of the search, or you can click on the END SEARCH NOW link. Doing the latter will bring up a Stopping search ... page.
  12. When the search ends, the EDG displays the Results: Data Set: Listing page:
    • Link to a Help page is provided.
    • The page provides you with information on up to 10 data sets at a time.
    • You can see a different set using the number range boxes at the bottom of the page.
    • Each option box provides information about one or more datasets.
    • To list or add granules, you first select a dataset by clicking in the small toggle box (a check mark will appear). Then click on the List Data Granules box.
      • The EDG Results: Granule: Listing page provides access to information about each granule.
      • The page provides you with information on up to 10 granules at a time.
      • You can see a different set using the number range boxes at the bottom of the page.
      • Each option box provides information about that granule.
      • To see the granule on a map, you first select a granule by clicking in the small toggle box (a check mark will appear). Then click on the Show map coverage box. (For details, select zoom to 8x (or 16x) and Redraw Map.) Multiple granules may be selected.
      • If it is active, you can click on the View Image box to see the browse image. It will take time to search for and display the browse image.
      • Select and read the documents to aid in your granule selection process.
      • Each time that you find a granule that matches your criteria, click on the Add.. box to add this granule to your "shopping cart."
    • The link to produce a Text only version works for all datasets; you can clip the results into a word processor or a spreadsheet.
  13. Before you can order data, you may be required to read and accept the terms of the Data Quality Summary statement.
  14. The EDG Shopping Cart: page allows you to chose ordering options, or to remove any or all items.
  15. Various order information and confirmation pages will be displayed and input requested. It is often a good idea to print these pages after providing requested information.

  16. Email messages will be sent:
    • Confirming the order
    • Confirming the shipping or giving the download directions
