Sample Information
This granule is global data for an 8-day period. For North America, it is representative of La Niña-related decreased snow cover conditions over the eastern United States and increased snow cover over the West. In the image above, 4 such granules have been processed with other climatological data to show the extent of lower-than-usual snow cover. The smaller extent, thinner cover, and earlier retreat of the snow cover have led to early drought conditions and to a large number of wildfires.
The MODIS/Terra Snow Cover granule contains fields for maximum snow cover extent over an 8-day compositing period, and a chronology of snow occurrence observations.
The MODIS/Terra Snow Cover 8-Day L3 Global 0.05Deg CMG (MOD10C2) product consists of 3600 pixel by 7200 pixel global arrays of snow cover. The global map is in a climate modeler's grid (CMG). MOD10A2 500 m files for each 8-day period are binned to 0.05 degrees to create a CMG product that contains the following fields:
MODIS snow cover data are based on a snow mapping algorithm that employs a Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) and other criteria tests. The datasets are archived at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) in Boulder CO, and are avaiable using the EDC.
Data Quality
The following statement is applicable to this granule.
CAUTION! Version 3 data contain processing refinements accommodating algorithm, instrument and calibration stabilization. MODIS snow products are considered provisional at this time. Product quality may not be optimal, and incremental product improvements are still occurring.
