Sample Information

The image above is representative of ENSO-neutral SST conditions; it shows upwelling near the coast of Peru, the colder waters of the Humbolt Current, and the South Equatorial Current

The MODIS/Terra monthly SST granule contains fields for sea surface temperature over the monthly compositing period. SST is a generic term used to describe four (4) parameters that describe SST bulk or skin temperature of the ocean during the day or at night. A time-binning routine is used to bin the Level 1 granule data (5-minute resolution) into time-scales of 1 day, 8 days (or "weekly"), and monthly and yearly averages.

MODIS monthly SST data are based on a monthly SST mapping algorithm that employs bands at 10 um to 12 um or 3.7 um to 4.0 um and other criteria tests. The datasets are available from the LP DAAC and from GES DAAC (last link below).
