General Information

Measurements Of Pollution In The Troposphere (MOPITT) is the first nadir-sounding instrument to simultaneously monitor 2 important atmospheric chemical species: carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4). Combined with concerted modeling efforts, MOPITT will help create the first global and long-term picture of the composition of the lower atmosphere.

MOPITT divides the globe into approximately 1 million individual cells, or pixels, and make a measurement over each one every 4 days. Each pixel is about 22 kilometers square, small enough so that emissions from individual cities can be measured. MOPITT will make measurements of infrared radiation originating from the surface of the planet and isolate the energy being radiated from CO and CH4 molecules by using a technique called gas correlation spectroscopy.

Because it measures infrared radiation, MOPITT is able to collect data during the night as well as throughout the day. However, MOPITT cannot "see" through clouds, a limitation that will cause a gap in data for cloud-covered areas. Sophisticated models will be used to estimate values where there are data gaps due to cloud cover.

Data Quality

Before using any MOPITT data product, the appropriate product release notes as well as the metadata contained within the granule should be consulted. Release notes for this Level 2 product may be found at
http://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/PRODOCS/mopitt/Quality_Summaries/2000-03-qa.html.

Data Product Quality

There are no known quality problems with MOP02-20001223-L2V4.6.2.hdf.

Sample Information

Top of Page

The sample is a complete MOPITT Level 2 dataset.

The 1-day sample includes clear-sky observations and observations with wildfire smoke and haze in the field of view; invalid observations (e.g., clouds in the field of view) have been eliminated. The MOPITT scan width is narrow enough so that several days of data are needed to cover the entire Earth. Thus, multiday averages, such as shown above or on a Visible Earth MOPITT Web page showing CO concentration total column effects that cover major parts of China, Africa, and South America, are best for analyses.

The user wishing to obtain MOPITT data for additional dates can obtain the granules from the EOS Data Gateway using

The full-sized MOPITT granule contains 24-hours of single scanner, instantaneous MOPITT footprints and profiles for CO and CH4 for the entire globe. Additional information about this product is found in the MOPITT Data Products Listing. Users interested in only Total CO data should look for the release of the MOP04 Data Product (Subset of MOPITT Level 2 Data CO Column Measurement).
