Sample Information

Top of Page

These datasets are intended to allow determination of the numbers of people at risk, in this case, by an ENSO event. The sample dataset has the following characteristics:

The Gridded Population of the World (GPW) dataset, produced by the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA), Global Demography Project, is based on population records for political divisions such as states, provinces, and counties. The GPW shows the number of people per square kilometer around the world in 1990 and in 1995. The GPW Version 1 population database has a resolution of a 5' X 5'. The GPW Version 2 has a resolution of a 2.5' X 2.5' (5 km). It provides estimates of the population of the world in 1990 and 1995 for both population counts (raw counts) and population densities (per square km).

The LandScan dataset is a worldwide population database for 1998, developed as part of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) Global Population Project. The LandScan population database is based on the worldwide census data obtained from the 1994 Global Demography Project. The 2001 database release incorporates several improvements in sensitivity. Census counts (mainly at sub-national level) were apportioned to each grid cell based on probability coefficients, which are based on proximity to roads, favorable slope, appropriate land cover and nighttime lights, to fill a 30" X 30" (1 km) latitude/longitude grid.
