TOVS Pathfinder Mission
The Advanced Television Infrared Observation Satellite (TIROS-N) Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) Pathfinder Mission datasets are generated from data held by NOAA. TOVS Pathfinder scientific data products consist of global L3 3-dimensional temperature-moisture structure of the atmosphere. These data are produced using observations made by the 20-channel High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder 2 (HIRS2) and the 4-channel Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) aboard the NOAA TIROS-N series of polar-orbiting satellites. The processing input is a Pathfinder product.
The physically based interactive retrieval methodology is called Path A or model dependent, and produces full retrievals of temperature-moisture profiles as well as fields of other geophysical parameters derived from the data. The model independent methodology, called Path B retrievals is also a physically based full retrieval system, but uses a pattern recognition first guess. Path C generated coarse layer temperature climate indicators based on linear combinations of adjusted observed radiances in MSU channels. They differ in handling cloud effects on the radiances and in the removal of systematic retrieval errors that may differ from satellite to satellite.

Surface, atmospheric, cloud, and
radiative parameters are all produced simultaneously in an internally consistent manner.
