After a successful launch in November 1997, the instruments on TRMM began science operations, following completion of final orbital maneuvers to place it into low Earth orbit. The release dates of specific data products depend on the complexity of the product and successful calibration and validation. The data quality from all of TRMM's sensors is exceptional. Current and subsequent processing of the data will yield enhanced scientific utility.

Teams of scientists worldwide receive the data to perform research in areas of international concern. A "Data Mining Service" is available for custom processing. Additionally, EOS data and products are available to all users, without restriction, at no more than the cost of dissemination, regardless of the intended use.

The TRMM monthly precipitation estimate is computed from data observed by the TMI, infrared sensors flying on the international constellation of geosynchronous satellites (geo-IR), and rain gauges. The TMI data are used to provide spatially and temporally varying calibration for the geo-IR precipitation estimates. The gauge data are used (as available) to reduce biases and sharpen the estimates. Comparisons from month to month show that most of the Earth's precipitation falls in the Tropics, and is concentrated in a narrow band roughly paralleling the Equator, the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

The TRMM monthly TMI sea surface temperature is computed from data observed by the TMI, which accurately measures SSTs through clouds. The drift of local overpass time enables observation of regional diurnal SST variations. The visualization shown above emphasizes regional changes in temperature over time, from an El Niño in January 1998 to a La Niña starting in May 1998 and lasting for 18 months.

The TRMM VIRS monthly fire product is a summary of global fire activity. It shows directly the "hot fires" that result from drought conditions in Africa, Indonesia-Australia, and South America. Drought conditions vary seasonally and are known to vary with the ENSO shifts in weather.

The TRMM LIS daily total number of lightning flashes product is a summary of global lightning activity. It shows directly the concentration of lightning over land and sea, even in local midsummer. In any one location, lightning varies seasonally (more in summer) and may vary with the ENSO shifts in weather. Annual, seasonal, and monthly composite images (not data) are available on the Web.
