Mount Oyama Eruption Forces Evacuation!

Small perspective image of volcano from ASTER data showing ash deposits. Opens the event page.

View of Miyakejima (Miyake-jima or Miyake Jima) Island, Japan, showing thick layers of ash deposited by the eruption of Mount Oyama on July 14-15, 2000. (This SRTM perspective image was provided by the NASA/GSFC/MITI/ERSDAC/JAROS and United States/Japan ASTER Science Team to the Earth Observatory Newsroom.)

In the year 2000, the summit volcano Mount Oyama produced several ash and steam eruptions. Accompanied by numerous earthquakes, these volcanic eruptions forced the evacuation of the entire population of Miyakejima Island, one of the Izu Islands about 200 km (125 mi) south of Tokyo.

Instruments on NASA's Earth-orbiting satellites have recorded the Mount Oyama eruptions and their effects. Sample data sets of the eruptions are made available on this CD-ROM and supporting Web site by the Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project. Data sets such as these acquaint scientists with the characteristics of Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) data. Their use is indicated by, but not limited to, the following:
