Pacific Pendulum Swings with Global Reach!
Impacts of El Niño and La Niña, 1997-2001

Muti-sensor image of Pacific Ocean with El Niño SST, opens the event page.

3-D visualization of the 1997-98 El Niño temperature anomaly (red band in the Pacific Ocean), with higher than normal sea surface temperature (SST) and wildfires in South America. [Image by R.B. Husar, Washington University; land layer from the SeaWiFS Project; fire maps from the European Space Agency; SST from the Naval Oceanographic Office's Visualization Laboratory; and cloud layer from SSEC, U. of Wisconsin, to the Visible Earth (http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/viewrecord?478).]

The El Niño of 1997-98 and the "Long" La Niña that followed affected many of Earth's environmental systems.
EOSDIS data offer springboards for local, regional, and global investigations into the cause-and-effect relationships of Earth's sea, air, and land systems.

About This CD-ROM

Top of Page

Instruments on NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) satellites record El Niño / Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Cycle events. The EOS Data and Information System (EOSDIS) mamages the data and makes the data products available through the Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) Alliance data centers.

This CD-ROM contains information about ENSO Cycle events (El Niño and La Niña) and their regional effects, information about EOS missions, satellites, and instruments, and sample EOSDIS data and documentation for the benefit of potential users of NASA's remotely sensed data.

Collecting coincident EOSDIS data from multiple sensors helps us understand the Earth as a whole, integrated system. Remotely sensed data are vital for monitoring and understanding ENSO Cycle events and impacts.

There are many different ways to navigate among the pages displayed by an HTML Web viewer:

Full granules of the sample data on this CD-ROM and other EOSDIS data products are available from the data centers of the DAAC Alliance and through the EOS Data Gateway (EDG) online search-and-order service:

The material contained on this CD-ROM will be maintained and updated on the Web site at http://eos.nasa.gov/outreach/. Select "Outreach Materials" from the menu bar and then "CD-ROMs" on the left.
